Update regarding Novel Coronavirus COVID-19

Update October 2021
2020 and 2021 have been devastating years in so many ways, but everyone at Sierra School of Performing Arts is looking forward to 2022 with optimism.
We are presenting "All Together Now" in November - we are using Reno Little Theater, and we ask that you please read the safety protocols from Reno Little Theater on our home page before you purchase tickets.
We managed to mount "Annie" in an outdoor venue this past summer, thinking it would be safe for our audiences, and we took many precautions throughout the rehearsal period - we rehearsed in masks! But once in performance, the kids were already back to school and the Delta variant was raging, and we had one person test positive our last weekend of performances! That was devastating. We had to cancel our final two shows!
Our next class session starts in January. Our most popular classes are on the schedule, along with a great new Musical Theater Scenes class taught by Adam Cates. After several years working as a director, choreographer, and creator on Broadway and internationally. Adam is back in Reno and ready to share his expertise with SSPA students. Classes take place in our large studio, with plenty of room for students to spread out. Class size will be limited to allow all students to have their own space. Students must wear face masks to and during class. Students may be permitted to remove masks on occasion when they can be physically distant from others. All surfaces will be sanitized periodically, and touching or sharing surfaces will be minimal or discouraged at all times. If there are new public health restrictions imposed when classes are underway, we will postpone classes or go online as is appropriate. Go to our Classes page for more info.
In the summer, we will be offering summer camps with theater themes for students ages 9-15. The same COVID precautions will be in place for our camps as described above for our classes to ensure our students and teachers are safe.
Thank you to all our actors, audience members, donors and other supporters who have helped Sierra School of Performing Arts survive this very difficult year.

June 3, 2020
With heavy hearts, Sierra School of Performing Arts announces the postponement of Annie. The show was going to be the high point of our fifteenth anniversary celebration. But the health and safety of our students, staff, actors, and audience members is our main concern. With the pandemic creating so much uncertainty about the future, and given the significant financial investment required to produce a musical, we feel postponing is the safest and most prudent thing to do.
For the first time, we did our auditions via submitted videos and Zoom. Despite the limitations of not meeting the actors in person until late in the process, we have put together a great cast for the show. We look forward to presenting Annie in the summer of 2021.
Sierra School of Performing Arts is working on other exciting projects. We will offer two fun and educational summer camps that are mask and social distancing friendly:
Masked Singer, the Musical, June 22-26, and Stranger Things, July 20-24. Both camps are designed for students ages 9-15. Masked Singer, the Musical will feature singing, dancing, and mask and costume making. Stranger Things will focus on acting and improv. Both will be active, creative, and educational. Sign your child up right now to see who will win the golden mask. Click here for details.
Cross-walk musicals. Look for our spontaneous, pop-up performances at drive by locations around Reno and Sparks this summer. The impromptu scene will entertain those in cars or on the sidewalk while they wait for a traffic light to change. This will be a new experience for our actors to create a performance that won’t draw a crowd.
Variety show. SSPA is recruiting participants for an virtual variety show which will feature some of the most popular numbers from past shows, and look ahead to Annie. The show will feature many of SSPA’s favorite performers, including some very funny friends of Janet’s from Los Angeles. Watch for more details coming soon.
Online musical. Like many aspects of life in these uncertain times, entertainment is moving online in ways not seen before. SSPA is planning our first online musical to keep our students engaged in a time when gathering together for a show may not be safe. Watch for our audition announcement in July.

May 5, 2020 Update regarding auditions for Annie
We are currently in the process of casting Annie. We received 88 video audition submissions! It has been a challenge holding auditions without actually meeting our auditioners in person! We continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation. The health and safety of our cast, production team, and audience is at the top of our minds. As soon as there is a government announcement regarding Phase 1 of the “opening” process, we will be able to determine the possibility of proceeding with rehearsing and presenting Annie this summer. In the meantime, we are continuing our classes via Zoom, and hope our June and August summer camps can be offered, live and in-person. Check back for more updates, and watch our Facebook and Instagram pages.
